Grainfields

Grains

Ryno Beukes is responsible for the grain production division of Grainfields.

This comprise of the cultivation of maize, soybeans and various fodder crops like sugar-graze and tef.  Since joining the farming operation in 2003, Ryno has been responsible for the cultivation of more than 50,000 hectares of grain.  New genetics in seeds, fertilizer and chemicals doubled the farm’s average maize yield over the last twenty years.  Modern and precision soil improvement techniques have become a non-negotiable aspect of the grain production division.  The farm enjoys an average annual rainfall in excess of 650 mm which, together with deep and well built-up soil, forms the foundation for Grainfields to capitalize on the unique location within the traditional “Maize Triangle” of South Africa.  Production risks are managed with hail insurance products, while the price risks of commodities are mitigated through derivative financial products traded on the JSE.
